2020 has been eventful, to say the least – even from the inside of our homes. Someone recently commented on an Instagram post of mine saying they’ve heard that 2020 is “the year of authenticity”… and I’d have to agree.

Somebody commented on an Instagram post of mine recently saying that they’ve heard this year called “the year of authenticity” and – wow, that really hit me. 

In so many ways this year, we’ve all had to take a really good hard look at ourselves and decide what we truly want for our lives, how we want to come across online and in real life, and what we want to return to when the world settles a bit more after COVID-19. 

Obviously, this year hasn’t been easy. For me personally, you’ve all seen that I started off this year by announcing a new beginning for me. My marriage ended, I changed my name, and I didn’t know what was next for me. Everything felt so uncertain…  and I didn’t expect the whole world to experience similar feelings just a few months later. 

I know that we’ve seen a lot of heartbreak and disappointment and frankly… some really horrible things this year. But in terms of the future of content, I really feel like things are going to change.  

The “imposterpreneneurs” and influencers who don’t have a very compelling story or movement to back them up have never looked so see-through. I feel like we’ve become hyper-aware of the people we follow, and hyper-aware of the fact that everybody is struggling in their own way right now. I think people are really seeing through the facade of social media right now, and care so much more about seeing authenticity and originality in their social media feeds.

So lean in to your story. Trust the process. Know that the pain you’re feeling can turn into power and change the world. It’s all possible for you when you lead with authenticity, share your scars, and be honest with your audience. 

We’re halfway through the year, and I don’t know what else 2020 has in store for us – but I know that when it comes to putting out online content, authenticity is the way forward. 

Authenticity is what makes your audience say “I see you! I feel this too!” Authenticity is what allows you to lead a community around you and build a business that changes the world. 

I know for a fact that authenticity has helped me build my movement over the years. And now more than ever – I’m headed down the road of authenticity, no matter how steep!
