What distinguishes successful social media influencers from the crowd? Some would argue that becoming an influencer takes looks, personality, status or wealth. While it helps to have any of those, the most successful influencers have certain routines and habits that allows them to be on top of their game. Becoming a successful influencer isn’t just about posting your outfit of the day, food shots on your Instagram or viral videos on YouTube.

Here are eight habits of successful influencers that have helped them rise to the top.

Number one, they’re mindful of their public persona. Successful social media influencers are aware of how they want others to perceive them. This means that they make sure that their brand identity is consistent in all of their posts. Stick to your own brand of authenticity. It doesn’t matter what you want to be, as long as you consistently show it.

Number two, focus, focus and focus. Successful influencers are the ones who are able to focus on what they do best. Introduce a schedule and make sure that you stick to it. While it’s important to have work life balance, you need to be able to develop a regimen to keep you laser focused on what you want to achieve.

Number three, create regular content. Online silence is deafening and it won’t help you. Social media influencers, content creator, key opinion leaders are popular because they make and share content that matters. The key thing is to stick to a schedule of regularly posting content that is interesting and compelling enough for your users to come back.

Number four, expand your network. Social influencers make it a point to expand their reach. Use social media platforms to meet and make friends with like-minded people. Word of caution on this, don’t act spammy. Be sincere and genuine that you want to touch base.

Number five, share and be generous. Sharing is caring. Being able to give and share to others is the secret to attract a following. Like they said, the more you give, the more you receive. Being generous is one of the ways to garner influence. This can be anything from free content, helping other influencers by reposting their content, adding a comment, sharing a conversation, creating value for others so that others may find value in yours.

Number six, make lots of friends and know theirs. Look for ways to be able to connect with your fellow social media influencers. Forge relationships with them. Take them out for coffee. Make some new BFFs online. This is a great way to grow your following and to be able to collaborate with other people, as well.

Number seven, study what works and what doesn’t. Analyze and pay attention to content that works. Look at what content is wildly popular and understand how people react to it. This will guide you on the material which will have the greatest impact to your followers. Make sure that each and every post is compelling and consistent.

Number eight, get out of your comfort zone. Reinvent the wheel. Don’t stay within your realms. Leap above it and, every now and then, evaluate what can be improved and what can help you grow. The most enduring influencers understand that change is as important as staying on brand. Embrace change and look for avenues to evolve.
