Entrepreneur On Purpose

Find your passion, and your purpose will follow. You’ve heard that, right?

Within minutes of scrolling social media, you’ve likely come across that basic idea multiple times. While, yes, this is inspiring, and in many ways, can be true, does every person who chases their passion find success? No, if that were the case, everyone who acted on their passion and went after their dreams would have a beautiful success story.

We all know that’s not true.

For every inspirational success story of passion and purpose, we hear several of those that pursued their passion only to give it up in defeat. So the question becomes, what is the fulcrum between passion and purpose?

The answer may surprise you, it’s adaptability.

While adaptability may not feel as empowering as passion and even purpose, at the very core of it, it’s how our planet has survived right down to its tiniest organism. Animals who have avoided extinction were able to adapt to their changing environments. Scientists are constantly altering antibiotics because bacteria adapt to resistance.

Our very existence has relied on this one very important skill. We may not even realize it, but we adapt every day, to the weather, unexpected traffic, canceled plans, the small daily events that occur which force us to adjust.

One of today’s most well-known quotes goes, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” Notice how this saying doesn’t talk about making lemons your passion or giving purpose to the lemons. This quote tells us to do one thing, adapt, and then the rest will follow. Make the lemonade, set up a lemonade stand, put your own unique touch into it. Make it into a thriving business.

There was a time when smoking areas were permitted inside shopping malls and on airplanes. There was a time when people only used direct mail, and now, both have nearly become a thing of the past.

How will Blockbuster, the movie rental giant that, once upon a time, were leaders in their industry? How was Netflix able to dominate and come out on top? It was not only their ability to adapt to changing technology but their willingness to do it without hesitation that led to their success.

Think of the bigger moments in your life where a lot of changes happened all at once, going to high school, moving to a new city, starting a new career, getting married, having kids. It was the ability to adapt to your new environment that allowed you the ability to overcome life’s many struggles and inevitable changes.

You are not the same person you were 10 years ago, so why should your business be? Think about where your business will be five years from now if you give power to the fear of change.
